The Emergent Structure series explores the space between sign and signified: the strange territory in which we recognise that something is communicating before we understand what, if anything, it is saying.

Across the three works, marks suggest writing, diagrams, symbols and fragments of an unknown language. Beginning as an apparently chaotic field of signals, relationships gradually emerge through repetition, proximity and the introduction of organising forms. By the final work, a structure has taken shape, yet its meaning remains unresolved.

The series developed intuitively, without a predetermined image or system. In that process I became interested in how readily we create meaning from what we encounter, and in what might exist in the space between a thing and our interpretation of it. Rather than resolving that ambiguity, the works remain suspended within it—somewhere between language and gesture, information and noise, structure and understanding.
