Coat Rack began with the image of a pile of Persian carpets thrown one over another — layers of colour, pattern and ornament overlapping until the boundaries between them begin to disappear. Spirals, flowers, geometric bands and wandering lines move across the irregular form, with each area seeming to belong to a different pattern before slipping beneath or colliding with the next.

The piece brings that visual abundance into an everyday functional object. Antique brass pommels become hooks for coats, while partial coconut shells form small vessels for keys and the contents of pockets. These practical elements are not separate from the artwork but absorbed into its surface, becoming another part of its collection of shapes, textures and materials.

Playful, extravagant and deliberately busy, Coat Rack turns an ordinary domestic object into something closer to a patchwork of collected fragments — part furniture, part mosaic and part imagined textile landscape.
