Touch is my favourite sense. I love the feel of supersoft fabric, the crunchiness of stone and gravel, the dry sandiness of cement, the silken flow of a new leaf, the oily smoothness of a rose petal….and I love to feel these in contrast.

The rule that art should not be touched is a barrier — a false and forced separation between the artist and the viewer. And it is a rule I yearn to break into bits every day. My Mixed Media art is meant to be touched, explored and understood with the fingers as much as the eyes.

Beauty is all around us, in the things we see, touch and feel every single day. But – because we see them every day, and because they are often surrounded by a sense of daily drudgery, rules and social conditioning – we no longer see their beauty. Unmade is about reframing one of those things, letting us see its beauty, and in so doing, giving us permission to ‘fuck the rules’ and leave the bed unmade today

“Flow” is about finding a sense of connection and harmony in the midst of increasingly complicated and overwhelming world. The contrasts in its complex textures inspires a sense of balance and harmony that is a soothing balm in a complicated world – a reminder that, no matter how complicated our daily lives, we all have that flow of universal energy running through us. The overall effect is a visual meditation on the ‘interconnectedness’ of individual existence with a universal current that grounds us, connects us and brings harmony and peace.

Gravity is about isolation as well as the profound need for meaningful human connection. The static smooth shapes represent isolated individual souls, forever separate, bobbing in the flow of Universal energy. That energy, in sinuous and dynamic plaster tracks, moves around and between the shapes in a way that suggests future connection…attraction…gravity pulling the individuals towards each other. In this we see the potential for even the most isolated souls to make meaningful connections with others, if only they could surrender themselves to the universal flow.

‘Snow Tide’ is about how, even in a state of harmony and wellbeing, there are spiky bits – things we still need to learn, to digest, to understand and to grow from. And these spiky bits are an essential part of the beauty– their existence can transform banal contentment into true joy.

Cityscape 1 and 2 are abstract interpretations of the feeling of inner city – the hustle and bustle, the monochrome of all the manmade voices that overshadow nature, but still, beauty is there — in the energy and movement, in the texture and contrast. It is simultaneously a critique and a celebration of city life. They were created in collaboration with another artist, Giovanni Caputo, and the intertwining of our two hands creates an added element of contrast and duality that adds to the overall depth of the piece.
